BSc (Hons.) Resource Biotechnology

Mohd Fairuzuddin Faizan bin M Yusoff, better known as Fairuzuddin or Fairuz, is an accomplished Researcher with over a decade of experience at the Industrial Biotechnology Research Centre, SIRIM Berhad. Holding a BSc (Hons.) in Resource Biotechnology from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Fairuzuddin has developed an expertise in gene editing and genetic engineering, with particular emphasis on CRISPR-Cas9 techniques.

His expansive skill set includes R&D, commercial services, management, marketing & sales, and communication. Notably, he excels in genetic manipulation and the integration of non-native genes into host organisms to achieve a significant increase in product yields. He also provides technical support to other R&D projects requiring molecular biology analysis.

Throughout his career, Fairuzuddin has worked on several transformative projects, including the development of a highly efficient recombinant yeast expression system for the production of pure biosuccinic acid and the enzymatic recovery of residual crude palm oil from pressed mesocarp. His international collaborations have resulted in the successful breakdown of oil palm's empty fruit bunch to glucose, turning organic waste into a valuable commodity.

Presently, he is working on two groundbreaking projects: 1) the production of DHA-supplemented animal feed using Thraustochytrids, and 2) the use of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to enhance lactic acid production in yeast.

In addition to his technical expertise, Fairuzuddin is a capable project leader, actively involved in institutional biosafety, ISO17025 lab accreditation, and occupational safety & health. His strong communication skills have enabled him to effectively promote gene editing through podcasts and articles, deliver international talks, and proofread master's degree theses. He is also an ISO17025 authorised signatory for Kinetic Turbidimetric Bacterial Endotoxin Testing.

Fairuzuddin stands out for his passion for biotechnology, particularly in using gene editing technology to improve the potential benefits for human society. With his deep-seated belief in the transformative power of gene editing, Fairuzuddin continues to explore and push the boundaries of Industrial Biotechnology.
